Companions
Companions are summonable NPCs that follow and aid players during combat and crafting in SWTOR.
Each class can unlock five unique companions throughout the vanilla game story as well as an extra ship droid companion. Additional Companions are unlocked as you play major expansions, earned as rewards, participate in events or purchased from the Cartel Market.
Companions can be changed at any time to perform as Tanks, Damage Dealers or Healers by right clicking your summoned Companions Portrait and placing your Mouse over the “Change Role” button.
A Companions effectiveness in Combat and Crafting is measured by Influence Levels in addition to your own characters Presence stat.
Influence Levels can be gained by participating in Cutscene and Story quest conversations with your Companions. The maximum level for Companion Influence is level 50. You can also raise a Companions Influence by giving your companions Gifts or using a Commanders Compendium [guide].
Presence is gained by Completing all Companion Storylines for all 8 classes, as well as collecting Datacrons across planets in the game.

Overview
There are over one hundred Companions in SWTOR from Force Users to Snipers, Droids and Animals. Each Companion has their own distinct archetype of Weapon, Skillset and Ability combinations.
The following Guide is a detailed analysis of every Companions performance levels in SWTOR across all three roles: Tank, DPS and Heals, sorted from best to worst across each Archetype, with outliers and key differences highligted and documented.
Best Companions
Based on our Combat testing across all three roles, the best overall Companion is Altuur Zok Adon, with Shae Vizla/B3-S1 also being an overall above-average companion.
While Altuur Zok Adon doesnt perform as well as Shae Vizla (in DPS) or Z0-0M (in Heals) on paper, Altuur’s unique Mark ability adds an overall performance gain that puts him to the top of the list for the Heal and DPS charts. Tank: Ultimately the best Tank companions in the game are Blizz and T7-01 by some huge margins, as they have extremely high Threat Generation, follwed by Sergeant Fideltin Rusk (Knight story). The best part about Blizz and T7-01 is that all players are able to obtain both of these Companions during Knights of the Fallen Empire, as they are not just restricted to their Classes origin stories like Sergeant Rusk.
DPS: The best Tank companions in the game are Altuur Zok Adon due to his unique Mark ability, followed by Shae Vizla and B3-S1 who are functionally identical to each other and also have unique DPS abilities.
Note: The easiest to obtain Companion of the three is Shae Vizla who costs 6 Galactic Season Tokens, compared to Altuur Zok Adon who has time-limited availability and B3-S1 who requires completion of the Prototype Basilisk Venture [guide]!
Heal: Altuur Zok Adon is once again the best companion for Healing due to his unique Mark ability, followed by Z0-0M and K1-Z3N who share similarly strong Healing abilities, though Z0-0M is consistently more powerful.
Note: The easiest Companions to obtain are Z0-0M or K1-Z3N, though both may require purchase from the Cartel Market, as Altuur Zok Adon has time-limited availability.
💀 Treek: Treek is by far the worst Companion in SWTOR. Not only does she have a full kit of custom abilities in all 3 roles, but each of her abilties perform worse than her counterparts.

Companion Testing was the hardest role to order as there are massive differences in performance, with Threat Generation and Survivability in the worst Companions performing in the low thousands and the best Companions performing in the hundreds of thousands. As such the Tank Comparison Chart uses a more complex tierlist of Companion Performance.
There are dozens of Companions that have incredibly high Threat Generation compared to others however any Companion generating over 200k TPS on average are excellent choices, while any Companion averaging over 30k TPS is a safe choice.
Ideally you do not want to use any Companions who generate TPS under the amount of DPS the average player can perform (30k or less), as it means the chance of a player taking Boss Aggro away from the Tank is high!

While Altuur Zok Adon, Shae Vizla and B3-S1 actively outperform all other Companions and Companion Archetypes in the Damage Role, it’s worth noting the gaps between ‘Above Average’ companion archetypes and the ‘Average’ is only about 1-1.5k DPS which is very small.
This means that an ‘Average’ Companion that hits multiple lucky crits may perform above an ‘Above Average’ companion that fails to trigger the same amount of random crits.
Another strong point about Companions in the DPS role is that not all of them have the ability to Sunder enemies, and many also do not have full 5 second stuns.

The Heal Role has the largest impact between the highest and lowest performing Companions in relation to keeping the Player or your Groupmembers alive. Stronger healing companions are often able to keep multiple groupmembers at full health where a lower performing Companion may struggle to keep everyone alive.
Altuur Zok Adon and Z0-0M (and K1-Z3N) drastically perform above the ‘average’ effective Healing of the best Archetypes which sit at around 20.5k HPS or higher.
Companion Archetypes that pull under 20k HPS on average are not bad choices, but may struggle to keep the Player alive during tougher boss battles or Heroics.
HK-55 and Treek severely underperform compared to their archetype counterparts and should not be used in the Healing role.

Performance Breakdown Guide:
TPS – Threat generated per second aka how effective a Companion can hold an enemies attention. The higher the better.
DTPS – How much damage gets through and taken as HP damage. The lower the better.
DPS – Amount of Damage per second a Companion gives enemies. The higher the better.
Sunder – The ability for a Companion to ‘break’ an enemies armor and increase damage dealt.
Stun – How long a Companion can stun an enemy for. Default is 5 seconds but many Companions have less time.
Generate Threat as DPS – Some companions output Tank Aggro in DPS form, this means there is a chance for some companions to ‘take away’ aggro from the Player.
HPS – How much Healing per second a Companion can heal the player for. The higher the better.
Off-DPS – How much Damage a Healing Companion can deal to enemies when Healing is not required. The higher the better.

Test Methodology
All Companions performance analysis were tested on multiple Level 80 Characters against both a Training Dummy (2M HP + Shattered Armor) and the level 80 Prototype FR3-DOM droids on Kessan’s Landing.
All Player characters had the following stats and shared armor to provide minimal variance in Companion Performance:
4105 Presence
All 4 Class Buffs active
DPS and Tank companion roles were tested with a Healer Class, Healing companion roles were tested with a DPS Class all wearing the same level 80 gear.
340 Rakata Armor, Two critical 340 Legendary Implants and 340 Blue-quality Alacrity mainhand and 340 Blue-quality Crit offhand. No augments were used.
As there are many different companions that function identically, we decided to test every Companion at least once against a Training Dummy on all three roles to establish an uninterrupted ‘baseline’ and then against a Prototype FR3-DOM droid to test ‘actual combat’ differences that the Training Dummy does not provide.
Every Companion with a unique ability set in any role was tested multiple times and the average was recorded, whereas multiple companions that have identical roles and skillsets were tested once against both a Dummy and a Prototype FR3-DOM droid, with their averages combined afterwards to act as variance testing.
