The Muur Talisman was one of 3 ancient Sith artifacts created by Sorzus Syn thousands of years before Kotor and Swtor. It was created for Karness Muur, a powerful Sith Lord so that he could use it to overpower the minds of other humanoids and turn them into his Thralls. Those who commanded the Muur Talisman could control armies of the infected Thralls, that would mutate upon infection into Rakghouls.
Presumed lost to time for thousands of years, its last known keeper died of unknown circumstances on Taris, where the unchecked Muur Talisman raised hell upon the planet, constantly infecting those with the Rakghoul Plague and turning them into wild Rakghouls.
312 Years before the events of SWTOR, Mandalorians would attempt to excavate Taris for the Muur Talisman, only for it to latch onto Jedi Master Celeste Morne and corrupt her immediately. Jedi Padawan Zayne Carrick saved her by placing her in stasis with the Muur Talisman still attached where she would be unthawed thounsands of years later, face to face with Darth Vader.
During the events of SWTOR, the Rakghoul plague had spread since Darth Malak‘s bombardment of Taris and the further Taris restoration project by the current Republic that was dismantled by Imperial intervention mid-way into the Cold War.
Years later, the Rakghoul Plague would have spread by both infection and scientist research as far as Corellia, Alderaan, Rishi, Tatooine and even the Tion Hegemony. An organisation known as T.H.O.R.N. was founded during this time to tackle the emerging Rakghoul threats across the galaxy.
Within the Tion Hegemony, a scientist by the name of Sannus Lorrick was caught illegally and unethically experimenting on both humanoids and animals by augmenting the viral elements of the Rakghoul Plague, from here he was able to “evolve” it to not only infect creatures, but have humanoids retain their intelligence, simply losing only their will.
Sannus Lorrick was exiled from his system of the Tion Hegemony when his work was uncovered, unfortunately his experiments were unleashed and it plunged the system into total lockdown until agents from the Republic and Empire could be called upon to aid in quelling the system-wide Rakghoul pandemic.
Sannus Lorrick fled and established a scientific research base to continue his experiments within a Volcano on Ord Mantell. It was here that he began to forcefully experiment on his fellow scientists and even himself, turning himself into a form of wererakghoul. The same team from the Tion Hegemony would then track his base to Ord Mantell and kill Lorrick.
While Lorrick had been defeated for many years, the Rakghoul Plague still reguarly appears and is quelled by T.H.O.R.N. and has been known to spread as far as Odessen and Rishi.
